Sorake Beach

Perfect wave, surfing, hammock, cool people, cool beer, hang out, right hand wave, 10 feet, sun, surfing contest, jamburai

Surfing in Nias is absolutely a highlight for pros and advanced surfers. Already in the 70ies a few Australian surfers discovered this magnificent wave which can rise up to 10 to 15 feet. Sorake has hosted many international surf championships, the last one sponsored by o'neill with a price money of 250.000 US$.
However it's mostly quiet out here in the sea and everybody gets his or her chance to catch the perfect wave and surf in the pipe.

Accommodation & Bungalows Sorake

Sorake has quite a few Losmens / homestays compared to Lagundri Beach. Therefore it is a bit more crowded and lively. Mostly the owners offer a package room and full board, which makes it a bit more difficult to change the location for taking your meals.  Take your time to look around and don't get nervous, if a few owners approach you offering their great services. There will always be a place for you to stay...so no rush, take your time. The best is to arrive at Sorake and first sit down for a coke or a beer. Relax. Then ask if you can leave the backpack for an hour or so and simply browse around to find the best spot for you. All of the huts are directly at the shore where you can have a direct view onto the waves. Remeber, Sorake is not a swimming beach, but a coral reef - with great waves ;-). Some Sorake Surf Facts, Nias

Sorake is a right hand wave. The wave height ranges from 6 to 10 feet - sometimes even 15ft. But only the brave dare to catch those black waves carrying a lot of water with them ;-)
Best season is June, July amd August, although surfers come here all year around.
Some surfers lost their lives at Sorake and died either on the spot or on the way to the hospital. It is like everywhere absolutely necessary that you check the condition of the sea and ask yourself if you are up the the waves that run to the shore. In the other corner of Lagundri Bay is another big wave coming in (left hand). But it runs directly over the coral reef. Sometimes one can see some very experienced surfers out there having a good time. Sometimes!
Other developped surf spots around Nias are Pulau Telo and Pulau Asu. Tropical pearls that can only be reached by boat. Some very nice bungalows although not cheap are available for rent there. The wave is great. David At +81265888869 or My Blackberry messenger PIN 2772c4a5
